The Power of Positive Thinking in Martial Arts
Teaching children to say "not yet" instead of "I can't".
Children often decide quickly that they are good or bad at something. In kung fu, we help them see skill as something built, not something you either have or do not have.
Words matter
When a child says "I can't do it", instructors encourage them to add one word: "yet". It is a small change that reminds them practice will move them forward.
Progress they can see
Belt stripes mark real progress. A child who struggled with a kick last month and earns a stripe for it this month has evidence that effort works.
Encouraging classmates
Students are taught to recognize the achievements of others. Cheering for a classmate builds a positive atmosphere and teaches children to look for good in the people around them.
At home
You can reinforce the habit by praising effort and persistence rather than talent. Ask what your child is working on, and what they will try next time.
