Setting and Achieving Goals

The master skill of success, practiced young.

We all have dreams, and most of us know that reaching them takes goals, a plan and a time frame. That is true for children as well as grown-ups. A goal is a measurable result to be reached within a set time. Children with specific goals tend to do better than those without direction. Setting goals lets children think, plan and act to earn a positive change. They learn patience and hard work and feel the satisfaction of seeing results. Since children are beginners at this, the focus should be on the process rather than the result.

The value of goal setting

Goals help children focus on the task at hand. Because children are easily distracted, small, achievable goals work best. Motivation matters too, and children lose interest in goals that do not feel relevant to them. Small rewards can help, but the focus should stay on completing the task. Setting goals in several areas lets children explore their strengths and interests and become well rounded.

Reaching goals builds self-confidence. Every goal a child reaches shows them they are capable. It gives them a sense of control and raises their self-esteem.

Goal setting with kung fu

Goal-oriented activities teach children the value of what is sometimes called the master skill of success. Like most martial arts, kung fu is built on self-improvement through practice. It centers on goal setting and asks for discipline. There are clear stages of progress, marked by stripes and belt colors. Working toward each one teaches a child patience and focus.
