Resilience Through Adversity
Small challenges in class prepare children for larger ones.
Children cannot be protected from every difficulty, and they should not be. What helps is practice with manageable challenges, in a safe place, with adults who believe in them.
Challenges sized for each child
A new form, a harder stance or performing in front of the class are challenges that feel real to a child but are within reach. Instructors adjust the challenge so a student is stretched without being overwhelmed.
Managing stress
Calm breathing between drills is taught early. Children learn a simple way to settle themselves that they can use outside class too.
Trying again
Not every attempt succeeds. Children see classmates struggle and then succeed, and they learn that difficulty is ordinary and temporary.
A steady place
When life outside class is changing, through a move, a new sibling or a new school, the routine of class stays the same. That steadiness itself supports resilience.
