Mastering Self-Control
Knowing when to move and when to stay still.
Self-control is one of the qualities parents ask about most. Kung fu teaches it directly, because the art itself depends on it.
Start and stop
Drills begin and end on the instructor's command. Children practice stopping in the middle of an exciting movement, which is harder than it sounds.
Controlled contact
Kicks and strikes are practiced on pads, never on classmates. Children learn to use power with care.
Words as well as hands
Self-control includes speech: waiting to talk, answering politely and staying calm when frustrated. These are practiced in every class.
At home and school
The same habits help a child wait in line, handle disappointment and think before reacting. Discipline sheets let parents reinforce them at home.
