How to Choose a Martial Arts School for You or Your Kids

Questions to ask before you enroll your child.

Not all martial arts schools are equal. Instructors generally do not answer to a state agency or need specific training. Some organizations require instructors to be certified before operating a school and to keep their qualifications current. Certifications might include:

  • CPR
  • State and federal background checks
  • Class management
  • Physical skills
  • Child safety skills and drills
  • Bullying prevention

Here are key steps, questions and tips for choosing a school for your child:

  • Research online. Read articles, stories and reviews, and learn what you can about local schools.
  • Make an appointment. A school should offer a free introductory class. Take it and experience the class and the instructors. It should be a positive experience, with clear structure and a personal connection with you and your child.
  • Watch the attitude of the instructor and the students. It is a good sign of school spirit. Respect goes both ways, and you should see it shown at all times.
  • Look for structure and self-control. A class should include a warm-up, specific training material and a cool-down.
  • Consider location. How close the school is to your home or your child's school matters.
  • Inspect the facility. Is it clean? Is safety equipment used where needed?
  • Ask about class sizes and schedule. When are classes offered, how long are they, and is the schedule flexible?
  • Ask about the quality of instruction. How long has the instructor trained, and with whom?
  • Check the class ages and groups. At what age can your child start? How are classes run, and how are beginners supported?
  • Learn the ranking system. How often are students tested, and what are the requirements?
  • Ask about tuition and fees. The instructor should welcome your questions and answer them clearly, and everything discussed should be documented in the agreement.

It is always wise to do your research before enrolling. Seeing what a school offers gives parents a clear understanding of the commitment and helps you choose the right school for your child. US Kung Fu Center teaches children ages 4 and up in Monterey Park, since 2009.
