Parents looking for a kung fu school in Monterey Park and the San Gabriel Valley often have questions before the first class. US Kung Fu Center teaches children ages 4 and up only, in a structured, supportive setting that emphasizes discipline, respect, integrity, focus and personal growth.

The questions below are the ones parents ask us most often. They are grouped by topic.

General questions

Does my child need any experience?
No. Classes are built for beginners and taught step by step, so a child can learn safely from the very first class.
Are kung fu classes safe?
Yes. Safety comes first. Every class is supervised by our instructors, techniques are taught with control, and children progress at a pace adjusted for each student.
Who teaches the classes?
Classes are led by Yanguang Shifu, our head instructor, with Coach Sherry, the owner. The school has taught children in Monterey Park since 2009.
How do I know whether the program is right for my child?
Claim Your Free Two Weeks. You can watch, your child can try, and we will speak with you honestly afterward about whether it is the right fit.
How often should my child attend?
Most children attend two to three classes per week for steady progress. We can talk through what suits your family's schedule.
How long are classes?
Each class is 30 minutes, a length that holds a young child's full attention from bow-in to bow-out.
What should my child wear?
Comfortable athletic clothing is fine for the first class. We will guide you on the uniform after enrollment.
Can I speak with an instructor privately?
Yes. Call or text (626) 281-5777, or speak with us after class, to talk about your child's goals or any concerns.

School-age children

What are the benefits for school-age children?
Kung fu builds confidence, discipline, focus, coordination and fitness, and it reinforces respect, integrity, perseverance and goal setting.
Will I see a difference at home?
Many parents notice better listening, more self-discipline, steadier emotions and more responsibility at home. Discipline sheets help us use the same words in class and at home.
Does it help at school?
The focus, patience and perseverance practiced in class often carry over into classroom behavior and schoolwork.
Does it help socially?
Training emphasizes courtesy, teamwork and clear communication, so children gain confidence with their peers.
How does kung fu help with bullying?
Children practice confidence, awareness and self-control. They learn to handle bullying calmly, use their words and avoid physical conflict whenever possible.
Do children learn self-defense?
Children learn safe self-defense principles: awareness, personal boundaries, avoidance and appropriate responses, never aggression.

Still have questions?

Kung fu offers children far more than physical activity. Students develop discipline, confidence, focus and respect that show at home, at school and in the community.
